After witness the second world war, many people began to have an opposing view with the war. Thousands were murdered, cities are destroyed…… People began to realize that, war is not a way to solve a problem, rather it directs to nowhere. The author had the same point of view just as others do, he portrayed the war as a savage, crucial reality. On the sea line, the red, ruddy moon is floating silently. There is not a single tremor. The picturesque moon looks so sad. It looks as if it’s crying and sniffling. The sea is created from the moon's teardrops. The author’s use of color, personification and comparison reveals the theme of hating toward the war. The author intended to convince the audiences, that they should avoid the war using such devices.
The use of color significantly affects the atmosphere of the painting. Depend on what color is the painter use, the entire interpretation can be change, just like people usually interpret dark as evil, and white as pure. Overviewing the painting, the general idea is that the people should prevent the war to occur, red and black cooperated to evaluate such idea. Red represents fierce, black represents evil, which is exactly the color that painter need. Even though the picture is very abstract, we can still tell that the picture has somewhat negative point of view about the war. The picture is trying to evoke the unpleasant emotions, therefore people would more likely to follow the idea present by the painter.
In my personal careful guess, I think author used the personification to the moon. As my interpretation, the moon was expressed as a woman. The moon was compared to a worry woman just as the people waiting for the soldiers to come back safely. The moon is the only one who’s spectating the battle without anything happens to itself. Moon is not able to do anything. The only thing that she could do is just watching and praying to God. Paul Nash was trying to reflect that the war is very crucial and the one who is waiting for the warriors are very impatient and worry. We can see that painter Paul Nash tried to present us how cruel the war is and the sad fact of people who are waiting for their safety.
Comparison is another good way to reveal the theme of the writer. As the writer or painter put the comparison inside their works, they can better show the idea held by them. In this artwork, the painter paints the bright pure moon on the left side and labeled all the massy colors on the right. This form a good comparison, showing that the pure heart of people doesn’t want the war.
The artwork from Paul Nash was awesome. Using comparison, personification and color, the writer establishes the idea of opposing force toward the war. Comparison and the use of color are good ways to show the message of the work, however personification is not too much. Color can tell you directly about the feeling hold by the writer, and comparison can show emphasize the thinking of writer, which is still frequently use by modern day society. However personification in paint are not so effective, because the method is so unusual, which make us not so understandable what and how is author trying to tell you.
