About the author

Daniel Defoe (1660-24 April 1731)

Daniel Defoe was an English trader, writer, journalist, pamphleteer and spy. His name was Daniel Foe, Defoe later added the aristocratic-sounding "De" to his name, and on occasion claimed descent from the family of De Beau Faux. He was born in Fore Street, London.

In Defoe's early life, he experienced some of the most unusual occurrences in English history: in 1665, 70,000 were killed by the Great Plague of London, and the next year, the Great Fire of London left standing only Defoe's and two other houses in his neighborhood. In 1667, when he was probably about seven, a Dutch fleet sailed up the Medway via the River Thames and attacked the town of Chatham in the raid on the Medway. His mother, Annie, had died by the time he was about ten.

Robinson Crusoe was published in London in 1719. It published in his late fifties, this novel relates the story of a man's shipwreck on a desert island for twenty-eight years and his subsequent adventures.

Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe

Simple summary of the story:
  • Robinson Crusoe, born into a middle-class family, rejected the advice of his father,to let him happy in his stable life, and ran away to become a sailor. Not long after, he was arrested and enslaved by the inhabitants along the coast of Africa. He escaped from the region and found work on a Brazilian farm with the help of a kind captain. There he was given the task of sailing to Africa. While sailing to Africa, his ship was unfortunately caught in a storm and sank. So his 28 years of living alone on an uninhabited islan started.

  • He began his new life with the food, weapons, clothing, and other things that was on the sunken ship. Lucky in unfortunately, the island is blessed with no predators, a warm climate and clean water.

  • During his fifteenth year on the island, he found large footprints in the sand by the beach and increased his vigilance. Two years later, another day in the shore on the beach, he found dead bones, and he realized there are cannibals in the island.

  • From then on, he discovered cannibals and began to pay attention to their behavior. In the 24th year, he rescued a native from cannibals and made him his servant. Because it was Friday when he was rescued, he named as Friday. Then he rescued Friday's father and a Spaniard, and he was no longer alone. In the 27th year, an English ship came to him. He took the captain's side, resisted the rebellion of the crew, left the rebels on the island and sailed back to England.

Theme of the story-----Adventures are not predictible

In the book Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe, author shows the theme that adventures are not predictible by describing two main events.

Story Analysis & Think about the book in Author's view

Book called “Robinson Crusoe” is the book about the Robinson Crusoe whose surviving in the island by himself. He only has Knife, a Tobacco-pipe, and a little Tobacco with him and he should survive in the wild place that he never went before.

The story postponed from the city to lonely island. In the city, the story when Crusoe’s father wanted him to be a lawyer, it seems like its touching current problems of the world’s society which is capitalism. These days, the pressure of the strong thinking that people needs to be the success in society to live happily had been making our world strange. Our world is gradually losing its original shape. For me, it seems like the author wanted to say it when Crusoe’s father wanted him to be a lawyer.

Secondly, when he started his journey which was his dream, he got a shipping rack and everybody except him died from it. He went to journey without any thinking or purposes. He acted like a little child for just make his dream comes true. For me, the author showed me for every temptation, there is a consequence.

Thirdly, he had lots of problems on the lonely island. He only had Knife, a Tobacco-pipe, and a little Tobacco with him. He should survive with it. For 28 years, he met lots of wild people, the slave whose name is Friday. After 28 years of exhausted life for him, God sent him a pirate and rescued him.

This book can only seem like a story of survival that means nothing, but while I was reading this book, it makes me feel how thankful that I am not having that kind of issue. Also, it makes me appreciate what I am having right now. When I think about the subject of this book, the subject should be “appreciate”. And the theme could be “appreciate what you have right now”. This book is kind of simple or it can be a little bit childish story, but for overall, it is a great book to read and there are many thoughts that author Daniel Defoe hide inside the story.
